The work of Benedictus “Dick” Mirande (b. 1938, The Hague), has exhibited throughout the Netherlands and Belgium since 1960. Mirande has studied at the Artibus Academy and the Graphic School of Arts in Utrecht. He has travelled around the world pursuing and refining his interest and passion for micro-ecological detail. Many of his realistic pieces revere nature and reveal even the beauty of decay. Mirande’s small still-lifes depict the loveliness inherent in used and faded objects.
Mirande’s painted tiles, actually made of craftwood, featuring Moorish and Dutch motifs and often with unusual and unexpected subjects, reflect his remarkable understanding of the tilemaking process. He replicates this in his work by painting in layers in much of the same way real tiles are made and, indeed, naturally age. His work on canvas also demonstrates this technique and his exquisite attention to detail.
Since being diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2021, Mirande has made use of stencils to continue his art and express his razor-sharp wit. His latest project, the Boat series (2024-), comprises more than 200 paintings and counting. New work has emerged remaining both colourful and humorous.
