About Dick
Benedictus Johannes Hendricus “Dick” Mirande was born in Den Haag in 1938. He trained at the Grafische School and Artibus Academy, and has exhibited across the Netherlands and Belgium since 1960. He later served as Creative Director at C&A for over twenty-five years, before devoting himself fully to his art, his collections, and his travels.
Dick’s extensive travels throughout his life have deeply informed his work, much of which pays homage to nature and finds beauty in decay, in objects worn and weathered by time. Tiles have long been a defining motif — often an illusion painted onto canvas or craft wood, following the traditional steps of tile-making layer by layer. Birds recur throughout his work as well, rendered with a keen eye for the intricacies of micro-ecology and reimagined from the hyperreal to the abstract; his bird series was even transformed into handcrafted block puzzles for children with learning disabilities in his then-community of Middelie.
In 2012, ninety percent of the artwork he had in storage was lost in a fire. Despite this, new work emerged — colourful and full of humour. Since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2021, Dick has made use of stencils to continue painting, his wit as sharp as ever. His latest project, the Boot series (2024–), now numbers over 200 paintings and counting. This collection gathers a selection of his work, shared here by his family.
